So ... it's been pretty much forever since I posted here. Like ... 10 years. This poor old blog got kind of abandoned but not forgotten. I've decided as a way to try to escape a creative void that I've found myself in the last several months — and having seen something a friend of mine posted on Facebook— that I would try to dig into my art and get back to a place of creativity that I want to be at. Hopefully in the near future I can get back to posting things I've drawn or created in 3D (gotta make them first though).

Joined Magic Box

So, a week ago (Oct. 15) I joined the Magic Box, which is an online art course by Chris Oatley, who was a character artist for Disney for several years. You can find it at chrisoatley.com. It's not free, but it is very affordable and very flexible. I'm still working on the sketches for the first assignment, but I will post sketches and progress. I signed up for an "imgur" account on which to host my pics for the forum there since that's how they roll. It lets you host your images externally. Looking forward to sharing!

Greatly appreciate it!

I recently asked several questions of artist Noah Bradley (noahbradley.com) and he was kind enough to take time to respond to them.
Thanks, Noah!

Inspired by a favorite book...

This is the first of several pieces I am working on as a homage to one of my favorite book series: Dune, by Frank Herbert. I drew the initial sketches while on vacation recently in New Mexico and Arizona. These are not based on the movie. They are based on my own imagination while reading / listening to the audio book. The first one that I'm going to post is of Paul Atreides before he gained the totally blue eyes he had later on Arrakis; Paul as a teenager on Caladan.

This is also an attempt to force myself to get over my tendency towards perfectionism. There are quite a few things I'd change with this, but I'm going to call it good and continue to work on improving.

I'm back... finally.

Well it took awhile, but I'm back. Took some time to work on doing some writing. That was interesting but not as fruitful as I'd hoped. But I still had a good time and learned a lot. Have returned to drawing and although I don't have a lot that I think is worth posting yet, I wanted to put at least one new thing up to start. Maybe I will get back into the 3D again eventually but for now I want to tackle one thing at a time and that one thing is going to be 2D drawing / digital painting. I have a ton of blank paper to go through and a lot of pencils, so I won't run out of things to draw with anytime soon.

I got myself Alias Sketchbook Pro 6 and have really been enjoying that. It's fairly easy to use and really is very responsive. Not a salesman or anything. Just saying.

Well, maybe there will be more later today, but for now, here is my one cartoony sort of fellow, who makes me think of Don Quixote, except without all his gear.

Not gone...just otherwise occupied

I realized that I've been neglecting this spot. I have been working on writing a novel and so the last month or so has been occupied with that.

However, I did just upgrade to Modo 601 which just came out and also now have Zbrush 4R3 which has some really cool new features. I definitely plan to get back to the 3D soon as there are some really awesome features in both of those programs.

In fact, Modo 601 now includes the ability to simulate things like gravity and collisions between objects. This would have made the key project considerably easier, but that's okay.

More soon!

Futuristic computer

I called it the Orobouros Titan. It is an imaginary computer from the 2100's. With new advancements in physics recently made miniaturization of circuits could very well get much more drastic. This little machine is about the size of a standard USB flash drive and yet has many times the power of the machine on which I am creating my work and this blog. At least, that is what I'm imagining. Who knows what will really be possible then.

The idea is that it has projection capabilities as well as wireless access. The screen is also interactive. No need for a physical keyboard, just break the electromagnetic field to type or scroll the text (which is not from the constitution, but rather based on it- it's actually part of the notes from a science fiction story I have been working on for quite awhile).  When I get to the final image in which it is on the table with the other items, I might just create a keyboard that is projected onto the table (they have them now) .. though the key layout is probably not going to be the common one most people would be used to.

Spoons!

Well... at least one spoon of which I made an instance (a "virtual" copy which doesn't use up as much memory as creating an actual unique item. Changes made to the original are reflected in the instance) as I wanted to show both sides in one image.

Coffee Mug

Coffee mug with coffee. Thinking of putting a spoon in it in the final scene.

Thermos

Here is the thermos I created for the room scene. I gave the render an environment just so it would have something to reflect.. when I finish the final scene, it will of course be reflecting the objects in that scene.
